Beyond the standard 49" panel (1073.78×604mm active area), HITULCD also supports custom glass cutting for OEM projects with special form-factor requirements — self-service kiosks, non-standard signage enclosures, in-vehicle/transit displays, and similar applications where the display area must fit a fixed cutout. Below are answers to the technical questions we're most often asked before a project moves to sampling.
1. Process Feasibility & Cutting Method
Cutting method recommendation
Depending on your target dimensions and tolerance requirements, we evaluate two approaches: mechanical wheel cutting or ultrafast laser cutting (femtosecond/picosecond laser). Mechanical cutting is lower-cost and suited to straight edges with looser tolerances (±0.3mm or greater). Laser cutting offers tighter tolerances (down to ±0.1mm), a smaller heat-affected zone, and is better suited to irregular shapes or projects with strict crack/chipping control — at higher NRE and unit cost. We'll recommend the right method based on your dimensions, yield targets, and budget.
Routing & circuit clearance
Whether the cut line interferes with the original panel's Gate/Source traces or the TFT active array is the first thing we check during feasibility review. To confirm feasibility, please provide:
The target outline drawing with tolerances
Required position of the active display area (AA) relative to the new outline
Full 2D/3D drawings if the cut involves openings or irregular corners
Our engineering team will cross-check these against the original Gate/Source routing and TFT array boundaries, confirm whether the cut line is safe, and advise if additional clearance is needed.
Edge finishing
Post-cut edge flatness and micro-crack control are managed per our internal cutting process standards, which vary by cutting method and glass thickness — exact figures will be provided as an inspection report at the sampling stage, ensuring no visible chipping or hidden cracks that could compromise reliability.
2. Reliability & Edge Sealing
Sealing process
Cut edges undergo secondary edge sealing to prevent liquid crystal leakage and moisture ingress. Standard process is UV adhesive dispensing/coating along the cut edge; structural adhesive or an edge protection strip can be added on top depending on your required IP rating.
Reliability testing
Cut TFT modules can be validated against consumer-grade or industrial-grade standards (level determined by application) including double-85 (85°C/85%RH) testing, thermal shock cycling, and structural drop testing. We can share reliability benchmark data from comparable past cutting projects at project kickoff so your team can assess risk upfront.
Optical performance
Light leakage or color shift (Mura) at the sealed edge is directly tied to sealing consistency and cutting precision. At the sampling stage we provide edge optical inspection data (dark-room light leakage test, chromaticity measurement) to confirm the edge region meets your acceptance criteria.
3. Cost, Yield & Lead Time
R&D and sampling cost
NRE for custom cutting projects depends on cut complexity (straight vs. irregular), tolerance requirements, and whether new fixtures/jigs are needed — our engineering team will quote this once your drawings are received. First sample run (20pcs) typically takes 4–6 weeks, depending on process complexity.
Mass production expectations
Expected mass-production yield depends on cutting precision and the routing clearance margin designed in, and will be confirmed with real test data at the sampling stage. MOQ for custom cutting differs from our standard-panel MOQ (1 unit) — cutting projects generally require a higher MOQ to amortize tooling and process qualification costs. The exact number is confirmed in writing at the quotation stage, not after deposit.
